Celebrity Matchmaker.
1. Warm-up: Begin by discussing the concept of dating and relationships with the students. You can ask questions like “What qualities do you look for in a partner?” or “Do you think personality or looks are more important in a relationship?” This will help set the tone for the activity and get students thinking about what makes a good match.

2. Assigning celebrities: Before the lesson, create a list of famous celebrities or public figures that your students are familiar with. Each student will be assigned a different celebrity to research and present in class. Make sure the celebrities chosen have distinct personalities and interests to make the activity more interesting.

3. Research and preparation: Give students time to research their assigned celebrity and gather information about their interests, hobbies, personality traits, and any other relevant details. Students can use a variety of sources such as the internet, magazines, or biographies to gather information.

4. Language practice: Provide students with a list of helpful language and phrases they can use during their presentation (download available here!). This can include expressions for describing personality traits (e.g. outgoing, adventurous), interests (e.g. loves to travel, enjoys cooking), and hobbies (e.g. plays basketball, paints in their free time). Encourage students to use descriptive language to paint a vivid picture of their celebrity.

5. Presentation: Have each student take turns presenting their celebrity to the class as if they were setting them up on a date with someone. They should focus on highlighting the positive qualities of their chosen celebrity and why they would make a great match for someone. Encourage students to be creative and engaging in their presentation.

6. Matching game: After each presentation, open up a discussion with the class about which celebrity they would be most interested in dating based on the presentations. Students can also share their own preferences and reasons for choosing a particular celebrity. Alternatively, your students can create celebrity profiles containing interesting information and an image. These can be hung around the classroom for a gallery walk before you start your discussion.

By following these stages, students will have the opportunity to practice their speaking skills, learn new vocabulary, and engage in a fun and interactive activity. This activity can also help students think creatively and improve their ability to describe people and their qualities in English.
